Most Interesting Facts About The Sun

The Sun is the star at the centre of our solar system. It is an almost perfect sphere of super-hot gases whose gravity holds the solar system together. The energy produced by the Sun is essential for life on Earth and is a driving force behind the Earth’s weather.

The Sun provides a vital ingredient for most of the life on Earth. Without the energy provided through sunlight, vegetation cannot grow, and without vegetation animals do not have a source of nourishment.

Our solar system began around 4.5 billion years ago as a huge cloud of gas and dust called a solar nebula. This solar nebula rotated and created a gravity that was so intense that it collapsed. It continued to spin fast and faster and then flattened into a disk-shape. A majority of the material was pulled into the center to form the Sun. Most of the sun is made up of helium and hydrogen.

Here are some amazing and interesting facts about Sun:

1. The Sun is located in the center of the Solar System.

2. The Sun is an almost perfect sphere of hot plasma, essentially, a hot ball of glowing gases.

3. The Sun is all the colours mixed together, this appears white to our eyes.

4. The Sun is composed of 73% hydrogen, 25% helium and smaller amounts of oxygen, carbon, neon, iron, and other elements.

5. The Sun is classified as a G-type main-sequence star or G2V star or Yellow Dwarf.

6. The Sun is so massive that it accounts for 99.86% of the total mass of the entire Solar  System.

7. The Sun is 109 times wider than the Earth and 330,000 times as massive.

8. The Sun’s surface area is 11,990 times that of the Earth’s.

9. Over 1 million Earth's could fit inside the Sun.

10. The distance between the Earth and the Sun is an Astronomical Unit (AU).

11. One day the Sun will consume the Earth.

12. Sun is the most important source of energy for life on Earth.

13. The Sun has a diameter of around 1.39 million kilometers. This is 109 times greater than the diameter of our planet.

14. The energy created by the Sun's core is nuclear fusion.

15. The Sun currently fuses around 600 million tons of hydrogen into helium every second. It is converting 4 million tons of matter into energy every second as a result.

16. The Sun is traveling at 220 km per second.

17. It can take 170,000 years for a photon to escape from the core of the sun.

18. It takes 8 minutes for light to reach Earth from the Sun.

19. The Sun is formed approximately 4.6 billion years ago from the gravitational collapse of matter within a region of a large molecular cloud.

20. The Sun rotates in the opposite direction to Earth.

21. The connection and interactions between the Sun and Earth drive the seasons, ocean currents, weather, climate, radiation belts, and aurorae.

22. The Sun has a strong magnetic field.

23. Temperature inside the Sun can reach 15 million degrees Celsius.

24.  In science fiction "Sol" is used as a name for the Sun to distinguish it from other planet like Mars.

25. Many cultures from around the world related the Sun with their most important deity and for good reason! Without the Sun, we wouldn’t exist.

26. There are billions of stars in the galaxy, our Sun will always be the most special star.
